Literature in a Diverse Population

My students need books that they can relate to. Most of my students are non-white students, while the majority of literature is about white people. They need books that they can see themselves in!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from low income families, and most of them come from families that do not speak English.

Every child in my room has the desire to learn.

My school is in the process of becoming a STEAM school. STEAM schools focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics.

Most of my students are non-white, while most of the people they see represented in literature are white. I have had students tell me that college and the careers they hear about are not “for them.” I want to change this representation for my students!

My Project

I work in a school that has a large Latinx population, and our diversity is going to be increasing largely in the next few years. Unfortunately, the majority of literature out there is largely about white men. It makes it difficult when my non-white students and my female students read these books and are unable to place themselves into the story, or see themselves accomplishing the things that the white men in the books are accomplishing.

We are starting an entrepreneurship focus at my school, and I want my girls and non-white students to also see themselves as being able to be entrepreneurs and leaders in the community.

My goal is to expand my classroom library to include books about famous leaders that they can relate to, as well as fiction books with main characters that look like them.

There have been times where my students ears perk up at the start of a read aloud, and they yell out "I call my grandma Abuela, too!," or "My last name is Martinez, too!" This is what I love to hear, and want my students to have more access to books like this in our classroom every day.
