Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Special Education teacher in a New York public high school teaching 10th, 11th, and 12th, grade self-contained English. The disabilities of my students include speech/language impairments, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's, severe emotional disturbance, and more.

All of my students have been in my English class in previous years.

They have made a great amount of progress since I first met them and I am truly excited to be teaching them again. As freshmen, my students had difficulty writing organized paragraphs and coherent sentences. Now, however, they are able to write high quality 5-paragraph essays. I always want to hold my students to high standards, especially when it comes to the literature we read in class. My goal is to find literature that is accessible for my students but also challenging. When I first met them, we read mostly modern fiction geared toward an urban population. Even though my students found these books engaging, I would really like to provide my students with a classic literature background. I had great success last year when teaching “Of Mice and Men” to my 10th grade class. This year, my 11th graders are really enjoying “The Crucible” and they are doing an amazing job of dissecting the text.

My Project

Because I am revising the Special Education curriculum to better suit the needs of my students, these books are not available at my school. I would like to read A Streetcar Named Desire and The Catcher in the Rye with my 11th/12th grade class. Not only are these books timeless, they are also engaging for my students. These books will give them a classic literature background that will undoubtedly provide my students with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It will also prepare them for a rigorous college curriculum.

Your donation will ensure that my students have the opportunity to read the books that are well-known and well-regarded in our society.

I am touched and inspired by their ability to face tremendous obstacles and continue to “dream big”. Please help them to realize their dreams!
