My students need some books about different counseling topics as well as colored pencils to complete projects about what they have retained from the books. The electric pencil sharpener would be great for those 240 pencils!

My Students

Our students come from highly mobile, economically disadvantaged families. For some of our students, the only time they are able to 'be a kid' and let their guard down is while they are at school. Our students are also some of the most giving, whether it is the piece of candy that's been in their pocket for a week or a dime they found on the ground, if they think it will make you happy, they want to give!

Due to lack of funding, our district has had to resort to a four-day school week.

We can't even keep the doors open all week, so money for classroom supplies is very limited.

I want to be able to provide a positive learning atmosphere for students to practice their life skills from speaking up against bullying to including and accepting others, from respecting themselves to making friends.

My Project

I already have lesson plans written for incorporating each of the books. For example, Recess Queen will be used to discuss bullying and how to stand up for what is right. What If Everybody Did That? will be used to discuss following the rules, both in my classroom and throughout the school. Enemy Pie and Memoirs of a Goldfish are both going to be used to discuss friendship and what 'ingredients' make a 'friendship pie' and what good characteristics of friends would we want in our 'fish bowl'. Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun will go along with being an individual and Girl Who Never Made Mistakes will go with not being perfect.

The donations to this project will improve our school climate by further teaching our students skills that are used every day.

Colored pencils will be used for several projects to allow all the students to be creative and enjoy art. Some of the art projects we work on include making brochures about respect in our school, making posters for not using drugs, and making Christmas books for our teachers when we discuss the character trait of Caring.
