Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When someone steps into our Reader's Workshop, I want them to be dazzled by the sight of students engaged in meaningful student lead discussions and activities amongst their group of peers! My goal for them is to become fluent fourth grade readers and a classroom full of leaders!

My school is a fantastic community of learners committed to finding the leader inside each of us.

We are an urban community and each classroom has a diversity of needs and learning styles. I can't wait to meet my 2015-2016 group of students and begin the school year establishing our ongoing literacy circles!

My Project

The goal for literacy circles is to encourage discourse between classmates about their book of choice. It is a similar format to an adult book club. However, it’s objectives are aligned with state standards and the instructor adds necessary rigor through reading comprehension skills. Students various jobs may include tasks such as: vocabulary enricher, discussion director, recorder or summarizer, illustrator. My students need meaningful literacy circles that celebrate student choice and student leadership during Reader's Workshop. Throughout my literacy development, I struggled to find my passion in reading. The times where I was most inspired to read, write and share was when I had the ability to choose what I read, had opportunities for leadership roles within a group and was able to connect with classmates about my literary journey. I want my students to have these opportunities to build connections and experiences around literature.

My classroom library mainly consists of novels that are in sets of five, a perfect opportunity for my students to engage in literacy circles with books of their choice.

These resources will allow my students to engage in different leadership roles within their circles. I feel that these resources will contribute to aspiring the lifelong passion for reading and writing; a passion that can only be developed through these positive experiences with books they love!
