This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My school serves an inner-city, high-poverty, bilingual student population. My students face many challenges in and out of the classroom on a daily basis. My goal in the classroom is to create interactive, hands-on activities to motivate them and keep them engaged with the content.

Through my lessons and the relationships, I build with my students, I hope to motivate them to become lifelong learners.

Despite the cultural differences my students and I share, we have built a strong community in my classroom based on respect and understanding. My students may face hardships outside of school, but they know that our classroom will always be a safe place for them.

My Project

This past school year was difficult for all of us. With all of the transitioning between in-person and distance learning, many of our students fell behind. To help my students make great growth this year, I'd like to incorporate engaging and culturally relevant texts into our literature circles. During our literature circles, students focus on developing discussion skills, using academic language and practicing comprehension strategies.

Having stories with characters that reflect our student body will get students excited about reading.

Also, with multiple sets of books, students will have choices on what to read. Having a choice and relatable characters will help get students intrinsically motivated for literature circles. This will help students push through the academic demands this school year will bring.
