This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My second graders are eager and enthusiastic learners. They are constantly participating in class through class discussions or simply sharing what they have learned. Teachers often hear kids complaining that they dislike reading, especially chapter books. Well, that is not the case in my class. My kids LOVE to read!

I want to start using Literature Circles in my class to increase fluency, build vocabulary, develop literacy skills, and, most importantly, teach my kids how to listen, think, and speak critically as they analyze their novels.

My kids are learning how to answer text-dependent questions by having to cite the text. I would love to see and hear them have Book Talk discussions where they state their claims and use text evidence to support them.

I feel strongly that my kids will leave second grade with a strong sense of how to analyze what they are reading. They are already excited to know that they will be able to annotate their book because it will be THEIR BOOK. Providing these books for my kids fulfills more than just reading. It will turn them onto reading with purpose. I love reading and model that love of reading to my kids. Now I want to model reading through Literature Circles and Book Talks.
