Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember watching a movie in school to complement a book that you just read? Can you recall doing that in the third grade? When we were third graders, there were rarely any movies as companions to literature read in class. But times are changing, and now the opportunity exists!

My third grade class is made up of 28 high-achievers who deserve the best in education and the most creative of classroom activities!

These students attend a New York public school and go home to houses, apartments or shelters with little to no materials to succeed in school. This group of superstars in an extremely low-income community is made up of students who want to do well and want to learn as much as they can, but struggle to have the resources to do so.

My Project

Many of us can recall the videos we watched in school to accompany books we read. The most vivid in my mind is "Romeo and Juliet." But that didn't come until eighth grade! In today's ever-changing world, we now have motion pictures that mirror elementary picture and chapter books! Why not use this as an opportunity to stir up literature-to-cinema connections in the minds of these young children?! This type of exposure and the opportunity to discuss books they read compared to movies they see will only help fuel their imaginations and get them thinking critically, far beyond that of an average third grader! We already have most of these picture books, so we are eager to start comparing them to their visual companions! For those books we don't have, I have included them in my proposal.

By making a donation to this project, you are helping to add a creative aspect to my classroom and are changing the lives of these fabulous eight- and nine-year olds!!

In forming literature-cinema linkages, my students will never look at books or movies the same way again. Instead, they will now observe with a keen eye and be prepared for the challenges of making cinematic connections to literature in years to come! You truly will have helped to change their lives!
