Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are extremely creative, intelligent, and brave. They want to thrive in this world, but in many cases, do not know what that would look like, or even believe in their abilities. Several of my students face or have faced considerable life challenges and are considered "at-risk" of not graduating. My goal is to get the students to see the potential in themselves that I see. I want to support them as they navigate this critical stage in life of turning into a fully grown, independent person who is capable of achieving great things.

The students I serve need to see themselves in a success story.

Sometimes it is difficult for these kids to envision themselves in this way because they do not feel involved in their education; that the perceived lack of classroom democracy leads them to feel uninvolved and undervalued. I strive to find ways to make learning accessible, meaningful, and comfortable through designing a physical environment in which they will feel more involved in the learning process.

My Project

Sometimes it is difficult for these kids to see themselves in the standard canon of literature taught in a high school classroom because they have not seen very many characters with whom they might identify. I strive to find ways to make learning meaningful to them through readings, film clips, and activities that represent their lives and are part of their own narratives.

Literature is an incredible tool to teach us about ourselves and our capacity for empathy as we follow along right next to the characters' journeys.

Not only do I want students to identify with the books presented to them in school, but I want them to also learn about each other, which often means learning about other cultures. With so much adversity in the world around us currently, it can be difficult for students to process the deep caverns that exist between so many groups in our country, making the school experience even more of a challenge. Books are a great way to transcend the chaos while growing empathy and compassion for ourselves and others.

Through this addition to my students' personal libraries, they will see classic literature from standards like Fitzgerald and Chaucer to praised contemporary writers from all over the world—and from many different backgrounds.
