This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What does the wallpaper in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper," really look like? How can the art of Romare Bearden help students think creatively about August Wilson's play, Fences? These are two examples of questions I would like my students to explore in our English class.

I teach at a Title I school in Manhattan in which most students don't get to take an art class until 12th grade.

My students, mostly Hispanic and African-American, are smart, creative, and eager to learn, as long as the learning entertains and engages them. In my 18 years of teaching, I've found that students produce some of their best work when they are allowed to be creative and show what they know. The irony is that they lack the supplies to create this work. This is what I would like to change.

My Project

I am requesting art and craft supplies to create projects in our English class to bring the literature we read to life while providing a creative, safe space for students. For each of the literary works we study, I have created art projects that enhance our study of the material. For example, when we read August Wilson's play, Fences, students also study the art of Romare Bearden, making collages emulating his style while depicting key moments from the play. Since Wilson himself cites Bearden as an inspiration for the play, students will use the chipboard, scissors, and glue to make collages from magazines and paper. When we read "The Yellow Wallpaper," students will conduct a close reading of the short story and then, using the canvases requested, create what the wallpaper looks like in their section of the story. Projects like these will allow students to use their imaginations and a chance to decompress and create.

These types of projects not only help students process the material we read but also help them make connections and express themselves in a creative manner.

For students who haven't been at home for the past year and a half, these art projects provide much-needed opportunities for social-emotional growth and communication.
