Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Becoming an Art Teacher for the first time I wasn't sure how to start my lessons in the beginning of the year. I struggled to grab their attention when starting a new topic because I was used to teaching reading and math. I realized quickly that being in a new classroom setting I didn't have to leave behind my teaching style just revamp it with art materials. I started introducing new art topics with a picture and getting them to have a conversation about what they see and notice. I introduce art vocabulary and have them use these new words in their art discussions and I have even been able to integrate a new picture book into my lessons.
Now feeling more comfortable in my new role I realized that merging my two loves of literature and art together motivates my students and gives me a focus for my daily lesson.
My goal for my classes is to introduce new topics with a book. Building the love of reading and being able to do that in something kids already love will teach them the importance of reading.
