Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Like all good teachers do, we want the best for our students. I currently work as a second grade teacher in New York City. My students come from a melting pot of different backgrounds and socioeconomic status. They are always excited to share any knowledge they have on a topic. As a class they love a good class read aloud and have so many exciting thoughts to share.

Although my students have the ability to be successful, many of them deal with situations that hinder their success.

Unfortunately, many of my students live in shelters and have parents who work all day and night. Many of them come from low socio-economic families.

They come to school wanting to do their best work but lack some of the resources that would get them more excited and engaged with all tasks. The method and environment in which they learn best varies greatly. I try to incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! They are truly a unique and special group.

My Project

I currently work in a diverse school. My students come from all different backgrounds and experiences. Diversity in characters is one of the most important part of a classroom library. Currently our library is filled with a variety of genres and topics, but not characters.

This project will help my students find books where the characters are truly like them.

The characters in these books come from all over the world, with different skin, backgrounds, experiences, and cultures. These books will open up a new world of reading for my second graders.
