This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the end of the year is approaching, my students are ready for more engaging literacy workstation activities to push them to becoming better readers. I want them to have built a solid phonemic awareness background by the time they go to first grade!

My students all come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds near the heart of Houston, Texas.

They do not have many opportunities outside of the classroom to practice their reading skills because their parents are often busy working and cannot help them. My students are very eager to learn more, and I want to be able to give them as much knowledge as I can while they are with me, as well as to teach them how to learn on their own for when they are at home.

My Project

With the Phonics Learning Locks set, my students will be able to independently match various phonics sounds to the pictures that have the same initial sound. They will then instantly know if they are correct or not because the correct key will unlock the lock. This will be great for literacy workstations because it is independent enough to be done without teacher assistance, as I will be working with my small group. There are also many different levels, so it will be great to help push my advanced students, and it will help my lower students with basic initial sounds. The sight word activities will be perfect for my students to practice on for their morning work while they are waiting for breakfast to be served. It will give them the solid foundation needed for these words to be in their reading vocabulary and will help with their reading fluency.

These materials will help my students improve their reading skills.

They will become more fluent readers with the sight word activity books, and they will have a more solid phonemic awareness background with the phonics locking set.
