Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life.” – Mortimer J. Adler

As a speech-language pathologist in an elementary/middle school in New York City, I facilitate the communicative competence of students whose language difficulties impact their ability to access the curriculum.

Our diverse school community includes many English Language Learners and children whose learning and social-emotional challenges require specialized interventions to help them succeed academically and socially. According to the International Dyslexia Association, “74% of the children who are poor readers in 3rd grade remain poor readers in the 9th grade…." Many of the students on my caseload find reading, spelling, and writing challenging. Their difficulties with decoding and encoding prevent them from reading independently, learning through reading, and expressing their knowledge, opinions, and stories in writing.

My Project

Speech-language pathologists’ knowledge of language acquisition and disorders, coupled with their clinical experience, equip them to generate treatment plans that support literacy development. My students struggle with literacy skills such as phonemic awareness (sound manipulation), decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling/writing). They have difficulty with skills such as sound segmentation and letter/sound correspondence. They also have a limited understanding of word structure. In addition to the core instruction received in the classroom during the early elementary grades, my students benefit from explicit instruction with materials and programs based on The Orton Gillingham Approach. Intervention incorporates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities in order to facilitate students’ understanding of the six syllable types and their knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and root words. As their ability to read and understand complex texts increases, they become readers and writers who participate more actively in classroom discussions.

With your donation, my students will have the materials necessary to learn reading and spelling rules in order to become readers, spellers, and writers who comprehend grade level texts, use academic vocabulary in their writing, and engage in collaborative conversations.

They will also come to appreciate Kofi Annan’s assertion that “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society.”
