Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My special needs fifth graders are from socioeconomically challenged communities. They are inspired and motivated to learn through technology. When our students used my personal iPad to learn how to divide fractions they went berserk. Technology is key to learning.

My students have emotional disabilities.

Their negative emotions prevent them from learning. They can become easily distracted. However, our school is designed to support their emotional needs through a school wide behavior modification program. This program uses a point system designed to increase positive behaviors while decreasing the negative ones. They all are from inner-city Brooklyn. They have some major challenges in their lives; however, with the right support systems in place, they can make a difference not only for themselves, but for society.

My Project

The iPad minis will be used during whole group and small group instruction. Some of my students have no access to a computer, Internet, or technology. School is the only place that they can use these items. These iPad minis will be used in math, teaching my students how to add, subtract, and divide fractions. They will be used in reading comprehension applications which will help increase my students' reading levels. I will also use these iPad minis during choice time where they may use them to learn about other things like our earth's environment and scientific things.

This project will help enhance learning in all of the core content areas: English language arts, math, and science.

It will help them gain many of the necessary learning skills needed to become college and career ready. They will be able to change their behaviors for the better, which will enable them to be more productive in our society.
