My Students

Kindergarten is where students learn to love reading! My intention is to help all of my scholars begin to love reading as much as I do.

My scholars, as we call our students, are a high energy group of 4, 5, and 6-year-old Kindergartners.

Most of my students are classified as Special Education students and almost all live in poverty. They have hard home lives and school is really a refuge for them; a place they can feel safe and loved. A place that is consistent and meaningful and where they will be pushed to do their best, no matter their circumstances. We truly believe that ALL of our scholars have the capabilities to not only attend but also to graduate from college.

My Project

In a class of 30 Kindergartners, almost half of my scholars are in our Special Education program. For many of these students reading is a truly difficult task for them and they are already getting frustrated. Many of my scholars are learning disabled and struggle with speech and language impairments. With the help of an iPad they can begin to more easily practice basic language skills such as decoding words. They can hear how letters and words should sound. Scholars can also use an iPad to listen to audio books that may be too hard for them if they were to attempt to read them on their own. An iPad would truly be a luxury in my classroom in which most scholars live in a poverty stricken area. iPads also help scholars not only learn to read but also how to use technology both inside and outside of the classroom.

When students feel confident in their abilities they become much more excited about learning and that is truly the most important thing that can happen in my classroom!
