Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading should be fun. Reading nothing but textbooks, however, is not. My high school students have not yet found that compelling story that leaves them wanting more. I want to help them develop a passion for reading by providing them with a diverse selection of titles and an inviting environment.

I teach in an urban alternative public high school in Utah.

We serve at-risk youth. Most of our students qualify for free lunch. We are incredibly diverse. Over 80 languages are spoken in our building. I work with 9th-12th graders. Many of my students are teen moms. I am a first year teacher. I have already purchased many materials for my classroom, but these materials are not enough. These students deserve more.

My Project

Our students are mature and capable. They understand the challenges of their environment and are eager to make a better future for themselves and their families. My students (especially the teen moms) are acutely aware of the value of education in their lives. A classroom literacy center will enable my students to truly enjoy reading. It will be a place where students can go to relax and just get lost in a good book.

Often I hear students say that they don't like reading.

They complain that reading is "too hard" or "boring". Some of our teen moms don't have a quiet place at home to read. Over the past few months, I have ordered a few books on art, books in Spanish, and comic books to start my classroom library. Students now come to me and ask to borrow my books. They have begun to enjoy reading. As a teacher, I am overjoyed. Please help support our classroom literacy center by donating to our project.
