Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a literacy teacher and I work with students in a Title I school who are not excited to read. I want to integrate some texts that bring back the fun to reading! With these books, students will begin to see that reading is fun and takes them on adventures!

My students are excitable 3rd graders who are not always motivated to learn.

They have seen some tough times in their lives and sometimes are a bit jaded when it comes to school. I have several students who are learning English and those that have already transitioned to English. The school I work has extended days and an extended year so that students can get the best most comprehensive education possible. Teachers work incredible hard to integrate technology and engaging/rigorous lesson that will help students not only succeed in the classroom but in the real world as well.

My Project

I teach literacy to 60 3rd grade students. During that time, students are supposed to be engaged in independent reading with books. I have an outdated library that makes reading independently boring. With these new books, the students will be able to get excited about reading again. I have also included a variety of book genres in the list that kids these days want to read. My goal with these resources isn't to just raise their test scores. I want them to fall in love with reading as I did when I was a kid. I want them to see the endless possibilities that books can bring. I want reading to become their passion. The first step in that process is to bring them books that are of interest to them.

This project will allow students to escape from the world of testing and get lost in a book.

They will begin to learn about their world from these books and find their own passion for reading. They will be excited to learn and I can already hear them sharing with me what they read about and the excitement in their voices! For me, that is the best part of teaching.
