Our students are hard at work learning about the power of words! They love learning brand new words, but we need sets of dictionaries and thesauruses as reference. We learn to use context clues to figure out challenging words, but using a dictionary is an important skill for independence and clarity.
Our students attend a Title 1, high needs urban public school.
They are curious, love to read, and are serious about making reading and writing a daily part of their lives. We have a balanced literacy program with read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. As they are exposed to more challenging texts, they need more tools for tackling new words.
My Project
Students will be able to independently find the definition to new words and apply them to future reading and writing. Vocabulary is one of the most crucial aspects of increasing literacy in children and adults. The more they know, the more they understand.
Third grade literacy is a predictor of high school graduation--it is a make it or break it year.
Our students are still so excited about learning so let's empower them with more resources!
