This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help me make English language learning fun and engaging for my Newcomer students! In the past two years the population of English Language Learners at my school has tripled. Most of these students are Newcomers from all over Latin America. For them, Spanish is their 1st language. But did you know that Spanish has about half as many phonemes ( letter and vowel sounds) then English?

That means that English language learners have to learn to identify, write and say about 22 new letter sounds!

Being able to identify these sounds is a skill that native speakers learn to do in Pk-1st grade.

With your help I will be able to provide my students with the literacy manipulatives they need to identify and isolate sounds. This in the long run will help them become proficient speakers, better readers and accurate writers!
