Many of our students struggle with reading. I know that there are many different obstacles when it comes to reading acquisition. Reading isn't simply recognizing your letters and the letter sounds. As students grow older, they have to reference many different reading strategies to dive deeper into the text. If students do not have a strong foundation in which to build on their reading skills, they will quickly fall behind.
This year, I decided to take a holistic approach to tackling my students' reading woes.
I have developed literature circles as a way of allowing students to take ownership of their reading. In literature circles, students are assigned different roles within the group, i.e. word wizard, character critic, connector, and setting sleuth. Instead of giving students a short passage on a worksheet with comprehension questions, students are participating in the study of novels that are chosen according to their interests.
In order to create the ideal environment for effective literature circles, I need items that I cannot get through the typical public school budget. Flexible seating with bean bag chairs is something that gets our students excited about gathering to read. Our current beanbags are completely broken because they have been loved for many years. The reading mats will help create a perfect space for a small literature circle to gather.
I have also included supplies that will be used for the project choice boards that are directly tied to the novels. Legos will be used for retelling, setting descriptions, and creating alternate endings. Sticky notes help students with annotating throughout the text. Poster board will be used for brochures, reports, and game design.
Please consider helping me close the gap in reading acquisition through literature circles.
