My 11th and 12th grade National English Honor Society students are limitless in their creativity and desire to improve our low-income, resource-deprived, historically and predominantly African American school.

After proposing the idea of a student-run Literacy Lounge and showing them clips of writer Dave Eggers' "826 National" tutoring spaces, I walked my students down to the basement of our school. In an abandoned hallway, they selected a room to renovate. In minutes, there were ideas on every chalk board, and they were already asking if they could move furniture, paint the walls, and order books, furiously scribbling on the warped chalk board. In a school on the brink of being shut down, they jumped at the opportunity to do something great for our community, and what started as a small idea is blossoming into a 3-phase project. Students at our school enter 9th grade more than 3 grade levels behind in reading and writing, and they are confined to an uninteresting and irrelevant curriculum that seldom allows them the opportunity to gain necessary reading and writing skills, despite our devoted staff's relentless attempts and modifications. The Literacy Lounge will serve as a student-run space that engages and responds to the needs of our teenage students. In order to create the space we desire, the students emphasized the need for comfortable seating as opposed to rigid desks.

These bean bag chairs will foster the comfortable mood and relaxed environment that my students wish to create. Although certainly enrichment materials, this furniture is nonetheless essential to creating this atypical school space.

Your support of this project will further convince my students that the larger community supports their endeavors, listens to their concerns, and values their education. We thank you for continuing to make our Literacy Lounge more than an idea.
