This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For my students, the English classroom is more than just reading and writing. It is about bringing literature to life. Sometimes this is through hearing the words read by the author or a professional actor or it is about making film adaptations of the works they are reading. Literacy is alive!

My students come from a variety of backgrounds.

Some are new immigrants, some are first generation Americans, and many take pride in their layered heritages. They are high schoolers who have navigated many obstacles and overcome challenges while staying focused on developing the skills to succeed in college and beyond. They are technologically savvy and hungry to integrate their tech literacies with our study of literature.

My Project

The iPod Touches will serve multiple purposes. First and most basically, struggling readers will have access to them to use for listening to books while reading along, both independently and whole class texts. Having piloted this with some students, I have seen a marked engagement with the literature. The audiobooks are professionally performed and allow the students to hear the words come alive. Secondly, we do a lot of performance in the classroom as a means of examining literature more closely. These iPods have incredibly high quality video cameras and the ability to edit right on the device or transfer to a computer. This will allow students to further explore literacy through film making.

The bottom line is that for many students, the access to audio books will make them better and more engaged readers.

The film making will enhance their technological literacy while allowing them to more deeply make meaning of the challenging texts they study.
