I am working in a high-needs Title 1 school in NYC. This school is the only school in the borough that is on the "Most Dangerous Schools" list. Every one of my students will begin the year according to national standards, below grade level. This is because many of them did not go to kindergarten, others are absent 2-3 days each week.

After teaching only one year in this high needs school, I witnessed the impact that literacy can have on these children's lives. They are excited about learning to read and that excitement is contagious. In the beginning of the school year the students would have to follow their older brothers and sisters around their home and force them to read with them. After a few months this became a nightly ritual and I would often see that parents would read with their children. When I check their reading logs to see what they've read and how long, I always ask about the experience. For many of my students, this is the only time they get their mother or father all to themselves. For many, this is the first shared literacy experience they've had with a parent. I know that after a year long commitment of nightly reading, this is a way of life for my students. They are expecting to read with a family member each night whether I'm their teacher or not.

The books in my library have been used for daily reading and at-home reading. With the Take-home-packs, I am hoping to instill more excitement when the children choose which reading pack to take home. With the stickers and the activity extensions contained in the packs, the children will be even more motivated to read at home and discuss these experiences with their classmates. The display case will showcase these very special books.

By contributing to this project you will not only touch my students lives but the lives of the younger and older brothers and sisters in their family. I have one student who is the only child of a single mother. She is 25 and a recent immigrant to this country. She and her mother learned how to read as I taught her daughter. I did not know this until very recently when the mother told me that they learn together what I teach her daughter. They read the books that my student chose. They benefited from this literacy experience. Is this a reality for other immigrant families? I think so given their commitment to reading and the stories they tell me about the at-home reading experience. With these at-home-packs, there will be a more focused shared literacy experience, since the publisher of these at-home packs have added supplemental materials.
