Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

According to recent statistics one in four children grow up not knowing how to read. Please help my students overcome this obstacle.

The group of 5th graders that walk through my door at the beginning of school were intelligent and motivated.

These students attend a public school in Pennsylvania. Here they are faced with many challenges; poverty, homelessness, crime, and many of them come from broken homes. Even with all this misfortune, they continue to try their best and grow.

My Project

Every day, my students take an hour out of their school day to participate in guided reading. During this time the students are engaged in many literacy activities. One of their favorite is the listening station. Providing them with audio books will allow them to listen to famous authors read and help them with their fluency. In order for the kids to become better readers they need chapter books to read. Chapter books that are on their level and interest them will help the students become more literate.

We need to change the literacy statistics.

It is important that ALL students learn to read. Literacy plays an important role in life. "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go," Dr. Seuss.
