My Students

Frederick Douglass once said "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." Imagine how you would feel at age 16 if you didn't know the alphabet.

Because of interrupted schooling many of my students did not develop basic literacy skills that are necessary for them to read and comprehend high school level material.

My students are all classified with different disabilities, primarily behavioral and learning disabilities, but will graduate with high school diplomas. In order for them to satisfy graduation requirements they will have to pass state exams and many do not have the necessary literacy skills.

My Project

Traditional teaching methods have proved unsuccessful for many of the students in my classroom-which is why they don't have basic literacy skills. In order to develop phonemic awareness and fluency I need to employ a variety of multi-sensory techniques. Tools like brightly colored markers to identify letters and sounds, a magnetic board for use with magnetic letters (which I already have), and the letter beads so they can build words, practice sounds and develop skills. The reading comprehension kit is a tool that will help struggling readers develop the skills necessary for understanding what they are reading, after they have learned to read it. The pencil sharpener is a basic need-easily sharpened pencils provide students with less of a barrier to getting into their work. All of these tools together will help to continue a developing safe space for literacy skill development and experimentation.

Donations to this project will help to foster and nurture a safe space for struggling students to become active readers who are ready to graduate from high school with skills that will enable them to be engaged citizens.
