My Students

Literacy is priceless...that is my class motto. We believe that without a strong foundation in reading, one cannot succeed to their full potential. As my students have started reading novels, their intrinsic love for reading has deepened. They are seeing the value of literacy and understanding.

I teach 78 students total.

My students range in ability from students who are far above grade level to students who are far below grade level. Many of these students come from homes where parents do not speak English. Many, if the parent does speak English, are not involved with their child's education simply because they do not understand the curriculum. The students attend a high poverty school. Many students receive free or reduced cost lunch. Students come in my class daily with a hunger for self esteem and motivation. I strive everyday to build the students up and develop a positive self esteem.

My Project

These two class sets of novels will change my students perspective of reading. These are books that are deeply engaging and students can relate their lives to. Numerous activities will correspond with these novel sets. This will enable me to teach the state standards in a new and exciting way for my students. Students will learn a variety of skills through these books. Skills varying from context clues, figurative language, journal writing, inferring. Students will also learn about the history of mobsters, Alcatraz, depression era, and elements of fantasy.

Without your support, these high interest novels will not be able to be a part of our curriculum. I know that my students will be impacted through these novels and gain a deeper understanding of reading.
