Literacy Is Important in the Art Room, Too!

My students need a sturdy front facing bookshelf that allows them to easily see what books are available for them to read. They also need three non-fiction books about art and how to draw books.

My Students

The students at my school love hands-on, tactile learning. They enjoy building and solving problems with their hands. I try to give my students a diverse experience with the visual arts.

My school opened in the late 1990s and "Learning Through The Arts" was one of the founding principles.

Students build sets for their 5th grade musical. we invite local artists to come and share their artwork and work with students. The art room also uses art as a way to explore science, social studies, and literacy from a different lens.

My Project

Students finish their artwork at different rates in my classroom. It is especially common in the first months of school to have a kindergarten student say "I'm done" after working for 10 minutes on a painting, while other classmates are taking longer to complete the project. So what should students who are finished early do? I need them to be able to work independently on something, while I help other students finish their projects.

Having shelves of books in an art room send the message that literacy is important in the art class as well as in the traditional classroom.

Yet, my younger students have trouble navigating a standard bookshelf because they have trouble reading the spines of the books and knowing what their options for reading are. A front facing bookshelf will make it easier to choose a book for themselves and can enrich their learning in the art class when they have finished.

Students who enjoy art classes are more likely to make art part of their lives many years after they have left my classroom. By helping us get the shelf and these books, you will help students enjoy art class.
