My Project

Students love reading when they receive relevant and engaging materials. I am excited to be able to give the gift of new books to my students. These two books speak to some of my students' interests.

Reading how a robot battles the odds and befriends an orphaned migratory bird helps my students build literacy.

I plan to use this novel as a differentiated text in a class currently testing two grades below grade level. Some of these students report a low interest in reading. I look forward to collaborating with students' robotics teacher to bring this book to life. Later in the semester, I plan to offer chapters from 'Braiding Sweetgrass' as an optional activity when we visit the garden. Kimmerer's expertise and knowledge on plant species and ecology will inspire questions and experiments in the garden

Many themes in both books connect to needs of 7th graders like belonging, technology, nature, and being present. My students are still kids who love a story and connect to the values weaved in the pages. Caring for themselves is hard, so getting lost in a story is a break that they all deserve.
