Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is full of fun, dedicated students who are passionate for more than just literacy and math. From the arts to sports, our students crave opportunities to try new experiences.

We are a Title I school that has been continuously been improving and expanding our music program.

Now all students receive music one period a week and are exposed to a variety of instruments. We use the Orff approach, where students first connect with music mostly through speech, movement and singing. We want to continue our program by creating a greater connection between music and literacy.

My Project

In K-2nd grade music, our curriculum is full with enriching literary experiences. Students explore vocal exploration, create melodies on barred percussion, use text to create rhythms on unhitched percussion instruments. Through music, we seek to expose students to a large variety of vocabulary that they will then be able to transfer to other subject areas.

We need books that we can create musical experiences with and felt stories to help students to be able to visual stories in an active way.

After reading text, students use unpitched percussion instruments and barred instruments to create their own soundscapes based on the stories.
