My Students

This would be my 1st year as a Kindergarten classroom teacher in a Title I school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. I want to be able to set the foundation for future learning in my students, but my new classroom is very limited in the resources that are available. Many of the students were highly affected and still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Harvey. Due to Hurricane Harvey, many of the students are still displaced and living in shelters. Many are currently living in foster care, being raised by their grandparents, and some are living with older siblings and other relatives. With all those adversities, I understand how important it is to have a classroom where the students enter ready to learn, discover, and explore.

My Project

As a 1st year teacher, I am super excited about having my own classroom but I am very limited in the resources that I have to be able to better prepare my students for 1st grade. In my new Kindergarten classroom, I want my students to be able to do a lot of hands-on, independent learning workstations which are totally different from the traditional "centers". I envision my 1st Kindergarten classroom as being a ditto (worksheets) free environment with EVERYTHING being hands-on interactive learning.

The use of this literacy bundle will allow my students the opportunity to build their abilities in language arts and reading as well as create a more positive learning environment in the classroom.

The students will be able to use the included literacy resources to better meet their needs. Not only would they be engaged and interested in what they are learning but they will gain more knowledge from the hands-on materials such as the magnetic letters, the dry erase boards, and picture library to be used during literacy whole group instruction and workstations. These resources will also help my students to stay engaged and complete the tasks for the skills that they are learning.
