Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a special education class for students with Autism grades kinder and first. My students learn through hands on activities and play that help them make connections to the curriuclum they are learning. Most of my students are nonverbal, but they are working on being able to communicate using sign language, gestures, and communication devices.

I have eleven curious students who do not let their disabilities limit them from learning and enjoying the world around them.

They are eager to learn and share what they know with everyone they meet. They are friendly and very inquisitive. My students come to school with a positive attitude and enjoy learning and helping one another.

My Project

In our curriculum, we have lessons on money. We teach our students about the value of money and how to exchange it for goods and services. It would be wonderful to have our students open a grocery store and learn about the value of money! They can use the baskets of food to sell to their customers. They will have so much fun using the magnetic money and cash register to ring up the purchases. Also, they will learn how to combine dollar bills and coins to add up to different values.

Our students can be more engaged in learning when the lesson is hands-on and dramatic play is an added bonus.

Students can learn to add and subtract money. They can learn to stock the grocery items and work on their fine motor skills. These materials will be able to help my students become college and career ready! The Play & Learn Grocery Store Financial Literacy Kit will be a great resource for my students to work on their vocational skills.
