Literacy Games Puts Excitement in Reading Again!

My students need several new literacy center games which support the reading strategies I teach while addressing different reading levels as well as the levels of English language acquisition found within my class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Greetings on behalf of a group of bright and promising future fifth graders! I am a bilingual elementary school teacher in an inner city school in New York. Our school is one that prides itself in its diverse community and strives to service some of the most impoverished families in our neighborhood. No child is ever turned away from registering even if teachers' rosters are filled to (over) capacity. As teachers, we know we have a responsibility to teach any child who graces our classrooms, because many "over cap" children who are the last children on our rosters become an integral part of our dynamic school family.

As bilingual and diverse children, my students are children who are learning English as they simultaneously struggle with barriers in their own native language of Spanish. Despite hurdles, my children have been, since third grade (this will be my third year with them) an astonishing group of individuals who desire eagerly to learn and become experts in the English language. I have always been an advocate for reading and have made it a point to share this love of reading with my students. However, without knowing the proper strategies to manage your way through a book, it will be virtually impossible for you to actually enjoy great literature. For this reason, this past year, I focused a lot of my time and energy in planning literacy lessons that explicitly addressed strategies they needed to boost their reading levels in English. Although it is wonderful to read, we are all diverse learners and my students are (after all) children. This encouraged me to introduce literacy center games on Friday afternoons not only as incentive for exemplar behavior, but as a way to allow my kids a chance to practice what they had learned in a way that was engaging yet educational.

As I am about to embark on my third year with my students, I fervently desire to keep them interested in learning new reading strategies as well as reinforcing old ones through literacy center games. Having them anticipate the games always put a smile on my face not only because they were fun and educational but because the games gave them opportunities to practice their English fluency, learn to share and innovatively re-expose them to reading strategies that all readers should know regardless what language you speak or text you pick up.

With all of these thoughts in mind, I leave you with the power to help me help my children. With your generous donation, no matter the amount, you will help bring us one step closer to bringing new, more engaging games into our classroom. Help capture and sustain an excitement of reading in English language learners as they master their second tongue. Thank you on behalf of my students.
