Literacy is the name of the game in my middle school classroom. My students love reading class novels, but we have a difficult time finding challenging books in our elementary school library. I'm looking forward to an exciting year with my 7th and 8th graders as we explore new literature together.
I work at a Title 1 school where we unfortunately don't get a lot of funding for the supplies that really change lives, like books!
More than half of my students are English Language Learners, which makes reading and writing daily in the classroom of the utmost importance. It's always an exciting journey to watch them navigate new worlds through the eyes of our main characters, this builds with the turning of every page. Last year I was able to purchase our first class set of books and we jumped right into the world of literature. This year, I want to travel that road even further and add to our library of middle school novels.
Having class sets of books of "A Long Walk to Water" and "Inside Out and Back Again" allows my students to use their close reading strategies on a daily basis, within a story that captivates them for months. Stepping into someone else's world through reading is one of the most powerful gifts I can give to my students.
The neighborhood my students live in is very dangerous, so it's not often that they get to travel to the local library and explore new things.
Bringing these stories to a safe place where they can access them on a regular basis is priceless. In their eyes and mine. Thank you so much for reading our story!
