My Students

I teach at a diverse school with an economically disadvantaged, largely English learner population that are in constant need of materials for student use. Normally our students have no books of their own in which to take notes and annotate for high order thinking as needed for their future. My students have thrived on reading and writing in connection to what they've read. They continually ask to take books from my classroom library home so the can educate older family members by reading to them.

My Project

These books will make a huge difference in the lives of my students. Since many (3/4) of our population are from low level income families they have little extra money for a such pleasure. In the past I have funded a classroom library that students take books from and then ask if they can keep it to share with the family. Without books students have little to help them learn the written word. I've seen students thrive when given the opportunity to take books home and share them. Today's youth need to be able to have books to read so that the written word doesn't get lost in today's technological one.
