My Students

Our School opened on September 9, 2004 with 600 ninth and tenth grade students. Our school currently serves approximately 1070 students in grades 9 through 12. We are a small high school community allowing for a more personal environment. Our mission is to inspire, support, and expect our students to achieve their fullest potential as learners and productive citizens. Students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are placed in the least restrictive environment. In most cases, special education students are integrated with regular education students in clusters, and resource teachers/general education teachers co-plan/team-teach these students. Para-professionals support our implementation of the collaborative model. We have experienced good success with this model and the achievement of all of our students. Our school motto is "Inspire and Achieve", echoing our school mission to inspire, support, and expect ALL of our students to achieve their fullest potential as learners and productive citizens.

My Project

My students have moderate to severe disabilities and are fully included in general education classes along side their age/grade appropriate peers. This means that they are working on similar material that has been modified to their individual level of comprehension. Using the principles of Universal Design, access for each of my students is considered and incorporated so that each individual has the opportunity to explore literature and increase their reading and comprehension capabilities. I believe, the classroom is for learning and interacting, not simply sitting and listening, no matter what ones differences may be. To this end, my students need engaging, challenging and motivating material.

I believe learning happens at all levels, in individual ways, and that the more engaging materials a student has to access the curriculum, the more likely their success in learning.

By making a generous donation to my project for literacy books and materials, my students will have greater ability to understand and participate in the general education classroom alongside their typical peers. With incredible photos, eye-catching graphics and super-absorbing subjects, the high-interest text books will captivate students—and make nonfiction and fiction text a breeze to comprehend!
