Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a kindergarten special education teacher in a Title One school in Queens. My class is made up of 10 wonderful students who are eager to learn and grow. Each day we work together to achieve our goals. Kindergarten is an essential year for them. It is a year in which they grow academically as well as socially.

Throughout the day, students work with each other during center time. This time is meant to be both focused and engaging for the students. During this time, I hope to reinforce basic skills that the students need. These skills are the building blocks to a successful life. Each task is individualized to meet the different needs. It is during this time that the students are able to work at their own pace and attend to tasks that they are able to accomplish. These different tasks or activities help make the children feel successful.

Due to the current economic situation, school budgets are being cut drastically and there is not enough money to meet the needs of these students. They need a hands on learning environment. The literacy centers have all of the supplies needed for students to build phonemic awareness. Students are able to manipulate pictures to match pictures with the same beginning and ending sound. Students are also able to look for rhyming words through the use of pictures. These center games will offer them an opportunity to learn in a different manner. It will allow them the hands on learning experience that they need. The hands on spelling mat would be unbelievable for my students. This would be a perfect activity for the students to be able to move around and have some fun while building their basic skills.

My students learn through demonstration and hands on learning. I know that these literacy centers games will greatly add to our classroom. The students will be highly engaged and interested in the different activities. These kids want to have fun while they are learning and these games will allow them to do so. This project is very important to me and I know it will help my students to continue to reach their goals.
