Literacy Centers in First Grade

My Students

I teach first grade in a Pre-K through 5th grade school in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. This year I am lucky to have 22 inquisitive little learners walking through my door each day. These students have yet to experience a normal school year, as they were in Pre-K in 2020, when the pandemic first began. The pandemic has affected students’ learning, and I see gaps particularly in phonological awareness and phonics. I have highly motivated students that are excited about learning and love our literacy center time.

They are the most loving group of kids.

Quick to help one another and me. We truly have developed a school family in room 105, and I am excited to add engaging literacy center activities to our center time.

My Project

When my students are engaged in literacy activities during our center time, it allows me to pull students to my table for small group instruction that is differentiated for each student. This is some of the most important time during the school day for me to reach those students who have gaps in their learning because of the pandemic If students aren’t enjoying the literacy activities I have them working on independently, it leads to classroom management issues that disrupt our learning.

I believe the literacy center activities I chose for our classroom will be fun and enjoyable for them and will help me to instruct small groups with few interruptions.

I am so excited to bridge the gap that students have due to instructional time missed because of the pandemic. I also believe students have missed out on opportunities to engage socially with their peers. Literacy centers are the perfect setting for students to learn problem solving skills and learn to work together to accomplish a common goal.
