My Students

Imagine a classroom filled with students working independently and in small groups actively engaged in reading activities! Each day, my students spend time learning in small literacy groups. They need better and more variety of choices to keep them engaged and constantly learning.

My students attend an elementary school in a community that is highly impacted by poverty.

Our students are also from many different language backgrounds and require specialized English language instruction each day in addition to their typical classwork. Many students do not have consistent and concrete learning opportunities outside of school and third grade is the transitional year in which students start using their reading skills to learn new information. While our families and caregivers want to be involved in their children's education, it is not always possible for them to provide both the financial support and volunteer time commitment our school needs to be truly successful.

My Project

My ultimate goal as a teacher is to push each student to learn and grow to meet their full potential. Daily guided reading time allows me to individualize student learning by creating different activities for small groups to engage with while I take turns working with a small group. Children cannot be read to enough, whether they are listening to stories in their home language or in English. A listening center gives students the opportunity to independently listen to a book and then respond to the reading in their journals. Activities such as vocabulary card games, comprehension cards, and materials such as dry-erase markers and letter stamps for word work allow me to design individualized activities for each small literacy group so they can continue to learn at their own level.

The magic of guided reading time is that students can continue to learn independently and in small groups with engaging activities while I work with small groups of readers.

Over the course of a school week, students not only engage in a wide variety of individually designed activities, but have the opportunity to have small group reading instruction with their teacher. Please help me create reading magic in my classroom by funding my literacy project!
