My Project

As a new school year approaches, it remains a forever goal of mine as an educator to harness the power of literature to see the world through the eyes of another person. Books should work at times as mirrors for students to see themselves and their voices reflected in literature; books must also serve as windows where we as readers can learn through the lives, minds, and hearts of others as a way to build compassion and empathy. Adding new releases from a diverse set of authors and characters aids in creating excitement around this sacred time. When students can read through the lens of another person and see into their minds, hearts, and worlds, the capacity for compassion and empathy towards others is built.

My students will reflect on their readings through custom reflection journals.

Journals, stickers to decorate, and journaling pens are included here. Those journals will serve as a tool to measure success in growing in their compassion through a series of prompts centered around building compassion via reflection of their stories read, and actions they can take to be more compassionate, empathetic, and understanding young humans.

As a result of such reading, my students will take action toward being more compassionate by sharing their reflections and action steps in collaborative conversations. Students will self-assess their growth on a series of rubrics designed to chart their own self-awareness of their compassion capacity. At the end of the year, students will complete a more detailed essay that both self-reflects and sets goals for high school and beyond on how they will continue to be a compassionate teenager, peer, student, friend, family, and community member. My hope is that the legacy of these students is one that centers on compassion.
