Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In an effort to have students learn more of the language and create an environment and community that they feel safe in, a handful of teachers have decided to establish an after school Anime Club. We are asking for XP Pen tablets to help students create their own graphic novels based on their experiences and interests in life as a holistic project of their identities. These novels will be presented to the school community in a forum to open up about migrant experiences. We know this will translate to future careers in writing, publishing, graphic design, and artistry.

This club will allow students to focus on their interests while learning English and exploring artistic outlets of graphic novels.

We hope through this club students will make new friends, have new trusted adults in their lives, and a place to explore art. Another goal is to increase intrinsic motivation for learning English by using something the students are already interested in: Manga and anime!

All of the students at our school are newcomers to the United States. They come from countries all over the world and look for better opportunities in America. They are all learning English and interested in various cultures. Since our school is a transfer school within the NYCDOE, our students come from every borough. The school works tirelessly to establish a safe foundation of a community for students to start this next chapter of their lives.
