My Students

My eighth grade English Language Arts students are the inaugural class of our new Magnet school focused on Design Learning. They and their families were willing to take a risk by attending our newly minted school located in an underserved, urban area in South Los Angeles. We are a Title I school with most of our students receiving Federally-funded, free breakfast and lunch.

Many of my students have below basic reading levels and deal with outside obstacles that make it difficult to learn.

Despite this, they have excellent attendance, and show up ready and willing to learn The problem is that many of them do not value reading as the gateway for the rest of their education. Many did not grow up with books at home where they could develop a habit and love of reading. In many ways, this has created setbacks in their educational success. My hope is to inspire within each and every one of them a love of reading books to help them develop into confident and consistent readers. I believe I can do this, if I offer exciting literature that is timely, relevant, and hopeful.

My Project

The Hate U Give is a young adult, award-winning book and is just what my students need to hook them into reading! It tells the story of a young, black girl who is compelled to stand up and speak truth to power when her unarmed friend is unjustly killed by a police officer. The movie of the book was recently released; which, in my students' eyes, will give the book even more credibility.

This book is powerful, riveting, and creates a space to have empathetic conversations about injustices in our society.

I know my students will engage with all the topics that are raised in the book; racial injustice, police brutality, gun violence, economic inequities, Black Lives Matter, and more. I can't wait for the powerful conversations we can have as we grapple with all of complexities that our American society presents and that this book shines a light on.

I know that this book can turn them into avid readers and see books as exciting ways to learn about themselves, our communities, and the world.
