My Students

"The important thing is to not stop questioning...curiosity has its own reason for existing." -Albert Einstein This favorite quote of mine goes perfectly with my project, because my students are full of questions. They are curious about the lives of famous artists, making me a happy art teacher.

Our students are inner-city kids who are tough on the outside, but all heart on the inside.

Our school is comprised of a very small amount of students, and since we don't have our own building, we are housed on half of one floor of a much, much larger school. They work hard and they really LOVE ART, which makes my job very enjoyable! Lately, they have been very curious to learn about the lives of artists, whom we study in order to inspire our own artwork.

My Project

I have always wanted to create a library in the classroom, but there was never enough money in the budget. Thanks to some donations, we have about 5 books that students can use. The wonderful thing about art books is that they will enhance and enrich my students' awareness of art. They will give students information about art and artists, extra vocabulary and visual content that go hand-in-hand with what they are being taught in the classroom. New York's curriculum is aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards, so it is vital to have literacy in the art room.

With regular use of books, the students' reading and writing skills will improve, which help them across all disciplines!

I will be able to lead the class in discussions on articles and passages from the books (which is great, especially because we do not have textbooks to work from). My students will be able to see the artwork up close and in COLOR (I have access only to black and white xerox copies of paintings!).
