My Students

Our students are bright, funny, and enthusiastic nonverbal, minimally verbal, or highly unintelligible children in grades 3-5 with varied medical diagnoses such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and/or Cortical vision Impairment with significant medical histories. They are all currently utilizing an augmentative alternative communication (AAC) device as a tool to talk and participate in the general education classroom. In order to achieve academic success, my students need to learn the vocabulary and language systems in their current communication devices.

My Project

Readtopia is a Special Education reading curriculum. It is an all inclusive program with leveled instructional materials for non-readers to beginning readers. Readtopia connects reading across content areas of ELA/Reading, Math, Social Studies, Functional Life Skills, and Science. Leveled instruction allows for appropriate reading and literacy levels while still learning age-appropriate materials.

I will be using the materials for ages 5 - 21 and across different reading levels using their augmentative alternative communication devices as an alternate pencil.

Improving a student's literacy skills will widen their technological opportunities and improve communication for more meaningful communication.
