I work in one of the largest inner city school districts in the state of Washington. I'm a teacher of students with visual impairment and a certified orientation and mobility specialist. I'm also the team lead for an amazing team of 9 teachers and 6 Braillists that cover the entire district, over 175 students ages 3-21. I'm based out of a Title I middle school that serves the highest number of homeless students in the city. We all love what we do and give our all to help foster our students independence and prepare them for life in a sighted world.
For students with visual impairment or blindness it's imperative their learning environment is conducive to their learning needs, such as proper lighting, accessible materials and organized space.
Students with visual impairment are capable of learning everything their typically sighted peers can, they just need things presented in a way they can access.
My Project
My students with Cortical Visual Impairment (the fastest growing category of visual impairment in the US) need materials presented using real photos with low glare lamination on sturdy black backgrounds. They require high contrast, bold letters with dark writing utensils.
These black plastic & lamination pockets will allow this group of highly impacted students to have literacy materials created in a method they can access and produce work using tools they can see.
Providing materials students can access independently allows them to be successful and gain a sense of pride & progress in an area that has historically been extremely challenging.
