My Project

Our students are passionate, curious, and deeply engaged in both creative expression and critical thinking. They are multilingual, community-minded, and eager to use their voices—in writing and in art—to speak truth and spread hope.

This project supports two distinct but connected goals.

First, we are requesting spray chalk to bring a student-led project to life: an outdoor installation of powerful, justice-oriented quotes in public spaces around our campus and community. Using stencils cut by our CTE classes, students will spray quotes from the memoirs they’re reading in literature circles onto sidewalks around our campus and community. Each stencil will feature a powerful quote that resonated with them, along with the memoir’s title and author, turning public spaces into literary invitations. This project transforms personal reading into public art, spreading awareness of diverse stories while encouraging others to pick up these books. It centers literacy as identity, connection, and creative expression—bridging the gap between classroom learning and the wider world.

Second, we are requesting multi-color highlighter sets in yellow, orange, pink, purple, and green. These specific colors align with a strategy taught in AP English courses that helps students break down and annotate complex nonfiction texts. Each color has a purpose—such as marking claims, evidence, counterclaims, rhetorical choices, and commentary—so students can visually organize their thinking and deepen their understanding of argument. With these tools, they gain confidence and clarity while working with college-level reading.

Both components of this project are designed to make literacy visible, joyful, and accessible. The spray chalk brings reading into the streets, and the highlighters empower students to mark meaning in the margins.

These resources support their growth as critical readers, expressive writers, and public thinkers—and we can’t wait to see how far they’ll go.
