Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember having your favorite book read to you as a child? Many of my kindergarten students do not get this opportunity at home. I would like to provide my students with a variety of book sets and CDs that will instill a love of reading and act as great models of fluent reading.

My class is comprised of 23 wonderful, gregarious kindergarten students.

They are eager to learn and the time they are at school is, for many of them, the happiest part of their day. If you were to ask them what they like best about school, I know many of them would answer, "Listening to stories." Our school is a high poverty school where 97 percent of families qualify for reduced or free lunch due to family income levels. These children are surrounded by violence in their neighborhoods, but our school is a safe haven where they are free to be themselves and learn in a comfortable, non-threatening environment. These children are deserving of so much and I know they will do many great things if given the opportunity.

My Project

Reading to children is extremely important part of a child's development and literacy growth. Listening to models of fluent reading can enable students to hear what reading should sound like and engage them to develop a love of reading that could be a life-long passion. If a child is able to listen to stories on CD or tape, they have the opportunity for additional discoveries in literacy learning. Many audio books contain music and accompanying turn the page signals to guide the reader through the stories. Children are able to track print and follow along while getting lost in the illustrations. The children in my class love our listening center and their eyes light up when it is their turn to put on the earphones and immerse themselves in a great quality book. I still remember the feeling of excitement listening to "Bread and Jam for Frances" on tape in second grade. I would love for my students to remember their favorite stories being read to them in the same way.

Providing my students with great quality literature and CDs would enhance their literacy learning experiences, while giving them an opportunity to momentarily forget the violence in their neighborhoods and focus on their love of reading.

It could be their "bedtime story" that they might not have the opportunity to hear when they get home.
