This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of my students have not discovered the joy a great book can have on their lives because many of them are at such a low reading level or are English Language Learners and struggle to read basic words. Having a listening center in the classroom will help my students become stronger readers.

My students come from very disadvantaged homes.

Many of them don't have access to a library because they don't have anyone to take them and their neighborhoods are not safe for them to walk alone. I work in a poorly funded charter school where my students spend time in my classroom from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. The classroom needs to be well stocked with materials that will not only aid learning but also be engaging.

My Project

Having a listening center added to our classroom will allow my struggling students better options for independent reading. The stories they read will provide genuine text to text connections and help my students practice reading skills and strategies genuinely. Hearing a book read helps students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also provide an important introduction to listening — a skill that all students must master in order to learn to read.

A Ready-to Go listening center will improve my classroom by providing them with a vehicle to experience great literacy.

Narrators tend to embellish their storytelling with dramatic enhancements. They emphasize reading as a source of pleasure rather than a skill, and make children eager to learn how to read. Children also develop a sense of narrative structure and understanding of language. Audiobooks help them to grasp the rich and various ways in which language distills and conveys meaning.
