Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are mostly ELL (English Language Learners), who often come from non-English-speaking homes and backgrounds.

My students typically require specialized or modified instruction in both the English language and native language, in their academic courses.

These students are in need of the necessary materials to succeed, coming from a low income/high poverty school district. Despite having to face several challenges such as the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, our students come to school ready to learn and with high expectations.

It is my commitment to fulfill those expectations as much as I can, so they can receive an adequate reading instruction.

I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative ways to succeed in reading!

My Project

A listening center with a CD/cassette player helps the students to listen to the sophisticated language of stories, poetry, and nonfiction language that they may not have access to in any other way.

Our students are in need of a CD/cassette player so they can hear literature read aloud.

Also, to decode unfamiliar words, learn new vocabulary, and see how printed words can be closely connected with spoken words.

The benefits of listening centers:

• Models fluent reading

• Helps students decode unfamiliar words

• Teaches critical listening skills

• Introduces new vocabulary

• Provides a read-aloud model

• Introduces new genres that students might not otherwise consider

• Introduces students to books above their reading level
