This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are intrigued by the world of books. Unfortunately, for some of my students, they are barely learning to read and find some books difficult to read. With the read-along books they can enjoy reading by listening and the same time improve their comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.

My first graders are full of energy and their curiosity drives their learning.

Their love and passion for learning is infinite and their excitement and smiles for new books is heart warming. Our school is a Title I school with 552 students. Ninety percent of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, with a forty percent English language leaner population.

My Project

My first graders will use the CD individual players to listen and read along to amazing literature. They would be listening to the stories in our listening center and after they would respond in their reading response journals. The CD individual players and stories would be an addition to our literacy centers where students are working independently, while I'm working in my guided reading groups. They would be learning to self-manage their learning by choosing the books. Also their reading response journals would be good indicator of their level of listening comprehension. In addition, they would learning about story elements in a low anxiety activity. This is so beneficial to my students that are struggling readers. They would be able to enjoy books and persevere as they become fluent readers.

Having the CD players and read along books are so beneficial to my class.

Unfortunately for some of my students, they don't have someone to read to them and miss out. Reading aloud is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading to language development. Among other things, reading aloud builds word-sound awareness in children, a potent predictor of reading success. Its the small things like listening to stories that make the greatest impact.
