My Students

The idea that a student can be transported to a different time and place, the ability to expand a limited imagination, and being able to read a beloved book on their own are just some of the benefits of having reading books sets on audio in a self contained special education classroom.

My students range in age from 9-12 and live in a high needs section of Brownsville in Brooklyn, New York.

They have an even wider range of disabilities. These special needs include speech impediments, emotional, intellectual and learning disabilities. Our school is set in a community that sees most of the families living in poverty and thereby unable to provide sometimes even the basic necessities for the students. My students see our classroom as their haven and books as their outlet and escape from the realities of their home lives and situations. Our listening library, though limited, allows for my lowest level students to have some measure of accomplishment as they strive towards their goal of reading literacy and comprehension.

My Project

My students need two sets of read alongs on audio for our listening center. Late afternoon usually finds my students settling in for Silent Sustained Reading (SSR). This is a time of day that is routinely anticipated since it gives students an opportunity to gather in their reading groups, listen to a read aloud story or sit at the listening library. The benefits are apparent especially in my ESL students who, after listening to repeated readings, are able to read the book on their own and are then able to overcome the phonetic barriers that are unfortunately a major part of their school experience. The listening library also boosts the confidence of my low level readers who, after repeated listening of a beloved tale, are able to read out loud during group sharing sessions that are held to clarify the text and enhance comprehension.

A donation of audio books for the listening library would be greatly appreciated because my students are way below the reading levels of their general education counterparts but they are still held to the same expectations and standardized tests.

Being able to read and comprehend text plays a vital role in them being college and career ready. The listening library along with other strategies taught in the classroom are just some tools the students need in their academic arsenal.
